Bringing your cat home.
Prepare a quiet space and help your new cat settle in.
Start small. A quiet home base gives your cat somewhere familiar to return to.
STEP 01
Prepare a home base
Choose a quiet room with a door that closes. Set up food, water, a litter box, a comfortable resting place, and toys before arrival. Keep the bowls away from the litter box. Ask the rescue what food and litter the cat already uses, and collect any available care records.
STEP 02
Check the space for hazards
Secure windows and screens, tuck away cords, and block gaps where a cat could become stuck. Keep medicines, cleaners, pest-control products, and toxic plants out of reach. Check the room from floor level as well as the surfaces a curious cat could climb onto.
STEP 03
Keep arrival quiet
Take the carrier straight to the prepared room. Keep other pets separate and limit the bustle of visitors. A whole house can be overwhelming at first; start with the home base and a predictable routine rather than introducing every room at once.
STEP 04
Expand gradually
When your cat seems comfortable, offer access to more rooms gradually while keeping the home base available. Ask your veterinarian about a first examination and the cat’s care history. Keep a newcomer apart from resident cats until your vet has assessed their health, especially when records are incomplete.
